The Staple Leggings

houndstooth print tunic

For this time of year I am all about warmth and comfort. The perfect pieces to achieve these goals are sweaters, tunics, thick leggings, boots, and a big coat. This look includes 3 out 5 and you could easily add a sweater over the tunic and top it off a big coat for when the temps really start to drop.Winter is all about layers but Fall clothes are the base of those layers.

So I have never been a leggings person and these are only my second pair. I was always on the ‘they are not pants’ team(and still am) but I make an exception if the top is long enough to cover up the important areas. These Wolford leggings are thick, completely opaque, and extremely comfortable. As I am writing this I am sitting in my living room with these leggings and a slouchy hoodie on, so I know these are going to be a staple in my closet.

To complete the look I added this houndstooth tunic and my favorite Fall booties from last year. I also finally replaced my bucket bag with a new cross body. I originally wanted this bag in a beautiful burgundy shade but it sold out quick and so I jumped on getting it black.

This is such a cute top, and it’s the perfect length to go with leggings. I completely agree with you on the leggings are not pants issue!

    • Thank you! Tunics are quickly becoming my favorite kind of top now.

  • Elizabeth Thames BeShears

To me, if the top covers my butt cheeks then it’s ok to wear leggings, even if I wouldn’t wear the top/dress without them! Such a cute outfit!

    • Yeah I agree but the coverage is definitely the important part.

  • Shauna C

Love the length of this tunic. They are my fav thing to wear with leggings too!

    • I need to get more for Fall and Winter.

  • Love the leggings! I am digging the hue wide waistband leggings from Nordstrom! The gray is extremely durable! : )

    • Thanks for the recommendation! I will have to check those out.

  • Lindsey

I love leggins- esp now that I’m pregnant but I’m with you- I think they should only be worn with a longer top. Love how you styled yours and those booties are gorgeous!

    Thrift & Shout

    • Thank you! I went with these booties because they were the same color as the leggings and made me look taller.

  • I like this look. I also don’t think leggings as pants and always wear a top to cover.

  • GoFashiondeals

Love the leggings and shirt! I agree with you about leggings. Those boots are so cute!!

  • I too am on the ‘they are not pants’ team, but with the right long shirt or over sized sweater they totally work! In you case here, it looks amazing! Love your boots too!

    • Thank you! I think once it cools down more oversized sweaters with these leggings will be my go to

  • ADA

I agree black leggings are totally a staple and I own several pairs. I am dying over that fabulous houndstooth tunic though. It is perfect Alicia.

    Welcome by. <3 Ada.

    • Thank you so much! The only other leggings I have are a pair of fake leather ones. I’m thinking I need to get more now though.

  • I love wearing leggings, as long as I have a top that covers my bum with them. I love yours paired with the houndstooth tunic, and I’m obsessed with those boots!

    • Thanks so much Rachael!

  • Laura Bustelo

This outfit is so cute! And those booties are totes amazing!

I am so on board with “leggings are not pants” but you make them look so cute! I have some that I love, but mainly wear them under long tunics or short dresses. So much more comfortable than tights.

  • Laura

I agree that as long as the top covers everything leggings are fine!

  • I love the cut of the fabric in that shirt- it makes it so unique! I am a huge sucker for leggings, but definitely with you on the opinion that all the necessary areas need to be covered:)!

    • This tunic is really uniquely cut but I mostly love how flowy it is.

  • love pairing leggings with dresses !

Coverage is definitely important with leggings. I haven’t dived into the leggings trend yet, but I think some outfits look great with them – this one included!

  • Leggings really are a staple of my wardrobe – as a mum they are practical and comfortable, though like you I will only wear things which are long enough! (I also can’t bear thin leggings – don’t need to see your knickers thanks loves!)

  • I love your boots! I can’t believe they are from Target!

    Jeans and a Teacup

    • Target has some really great boots for Fall.

  • I’m loving this top/tunic with the leggings. Such an adorable look!!
